The shriek of the final whistle in Basle was a bitter sound of sheer disappointment for the travelling Boro fans.

Down and almost out in Switzerland.

After all those triumphs in so many far flung corners of Europe, to fall to two sucker punches in a mad five minutes was almost too much to bear. Boro, the team that out-continentaled the continentals in patient possession football, had been rumbled by bad luck and flawed concentration.

But then we paused for a minute, caught our breath and thought we're not quite done yet. There's still one last throw of the dice. And what's more we, the Boro fans, have an opportunity to really make an impression and for the first time this season put Fortress Riverside on the European map. On returning to Middlesbrough you could feel it in the air, that spirit of defiance, that backs against the wall, underdog position we all deep down revel in.
