A man was rescued from the bedroom of his home yesterday after a fire.

Fire crews were called to Whitehall Street in South Shields at about 11.20am after a fire broke out in a first-floor flat. The owner was taken to South Tyneside District Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, but the fire had burned itself out when crews arrived.

MIDDLE school children from Morpeth got the chance to try out a range of foreign languages at an event organised by one of the region's biggest firms.

The 12-year-olds from Chantry Middle School visited Procter and Gamble's site at Cobalt Business Park in North Tyneside to meet the company's linguists and find out how speaking a language can help in their career.
