Veteran Duo Lead the Way

Two veterans will be showing the way when the Tynedale Challenge gets under way today.

The 25-mile trek through the Northumberland hills has become an annual event for 69-year-old Marjorie Wilkinson ( who has finished every once since the event started 15 years ago.

Once again the oldest walker will be 78-year-old Ted Ward, of Umfraville Dene, Prudhoe.

It is the 10th time Ted has taken part in the challenge.

He said: "I love walking and this is fantastic day. I am getting a bit slower now but I am managing to finish in about eight hours."

Mrs Wilkinson, of Ivy Cottage, Henshaw, near Bardon Mill, Northumberland, is a member of the Long Distance Walking Association and will set off with almost 500 other competitors today.

The Allendale Challenge raises money for the North of Tyne Search and Rescue team.

Mrs Wilkinson's son-in-law, Stuart Jones, is a member and she said: "Keen walkers appreciate just how important the group is. …
