Britain's theme parks are re-opening with a bang ( particularly at Thorpe Park, Surrey, with the unveiling of Stealth, a pounds 12m "white knuckle" ride to stand proudly alongside the already notorious rides of Colossus and Nemesis.

With a 200ft drop in under 2.5 seconds, Thorpe Park promises a "gut wrenching vertical lift and drop" hitting speeds up to 80mph to grab the title of the fastest "coaster" experience in Europe from Silverstar in Germany with acceleration exceeding that of a jumbo jet.

However, with over 25 rides and attractions, Thorpe Park (www.thorpepark.com) is hardly a cheap day out ( 2006 daily prices are pounds 28.50 per adult, pounds 20 for under-12s, and family tickets from pounds 78.

At Alton Towers (0870 444-8421, www.altontowers.com), pounds 8m has been invested in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, an indoor journey based on Roald Dahl's famous book and Quentin Blake's unique illustrations.
