Boss Puts Success Down to the A-Team

The boss of Tees Valley Company of the Year says his staff are the A-team.

Avecia Biologics, of Billingham, which employs 495, took the title at the Tees Valley Business Awards, part of the North East Business Awards organised by The Journal and the Evening Gazette.

Avecia is a world leader in the development of advanced medicines using biotechnology.

It helps companies in North America, Europe and Japan convert healthcare research into the safe, effective, affordable and profitable new medicines.

And Thursday marked a double celebration for internet retailer YooNoo, of Stokesley, which won awards for both innovation and internet & ICT.

The company sells global positioning systems, MP3 players and digital radios and accessories.

YooNoo started in a back-bedroom five years ago but the company now employs 40 people in purpose-built business park premises.

Kevin Cox, of Avecia, said its success was down to "four Ps" ( performance, place, and passionate people ( and dubbed his staff the A-team.

Alastair MacColl, managing director of Gazette Media Company, publisher of the Evening Gazette, told the audience of 600 at the awards evening on Thursday: "You will hear lot of inspirational stories. …
