Yorkshire Trips Set to Test Thunder

Gateshead Thunder face a tough opening to their LHF Healthplan National League Two campaign with consecutive trips to Yorkshire.

The Tynesiders kick off at Featherstone Rovers tomorrow followed by Hunslet Hawks in Leeds on Good Friday.

The Hawks finished fourth in last year's NL2 while Featherstone are tipped to reclaim their first division place at the first time of asking.

Three of Gateshead's first four games are away from Tyneside and the loss of next month's Barrow Raiders home game has caused further problems.

"We'll have only one home game in each of the first two months of the new league season, which is a ridiculous situation," said chairman Bill Midgley.

After a disappointing cup campaign brought six defeats from seven games Gateshead could have done with some home comforts in the league.

"It's a tough start," said coach Dean Thomas. "But it's one we've been working towards and I'm very excited about the new National League Two season.

"Making the play-offs again is the minimum aim. …
