The Falcons are geared up for a massive forward battle when they run out to face Bristol in tomorrow's big Guinness Premiership relegation battle at the Memorial Stadium (3.00).

Although Leeds Tykes' 13-17 home defeat by Saracens last night leaves the Yorkshire team 10 points adrift of both Newcastle and Bristol with just three games to go, victory tomorrow would banish all fear of the dreaded drop to National Division One next season for the winners.

It was Bristol who shocked the Falcons with a two-point win at Kingston Park at the start of the season and Newcastle's Wallsend-born prop Micky Ward is determined for revenge, saying: "We owe them one ( but then again we owe a few people one at the moment!"

The 27-year-old, who will start his 98th competitive match for the Falcons, explained: "I don't know whether we were surprised by them back in September or what.

"I did not underestimate them and I hope nobody else did, but they have shown this season they are in the Premiership on merit.

"They have done well and have a tough pack, so it will be another big challenge for the forwards.

"However, if we step up and play how we know we can then we are confident we can claim a good result down there."

With the Falcons blowing hot and cold over the course of the season, the typically honest Geordie assessment from Ward highlights the tight exchanges, saying: "Looking back throughout the season, the thing which seems to decide all our results is how physical we are on the day.

"If you look at the Northampton game two weeks ago we were not particularly physical, whereas they fought for the extra yard in every ruck and tackle.

"Then last week against Connacht we stood up to their physicality and matched them in that area.

"Whenever we do that the backs take care of themselves, because we have probably the best back line in the country when we manage to give them consistent quick ball. …
