Brothers have been praised after they came to the aid of an elderly man who hurt himself tripping on a pavement.

Graham Grief was walking younger brothers Jack, 11, and Tom, nine, home from Park End Primary School when they came across Gordon Heppenstall, 75, while walking along Sandringham Road, Middlesbrough.

Mr Heppenstall had fallen and badly cut his eye and the boys sprang into action.

Mr Heppenstall, who lives in sheltered accommodation at Hastings House with his wife Beryl, said he was very grateful for the help they gave him.

Graham 17, said: "He had fallen over and had a bad cut above his eye. We checked he was OK and gave him his money which he had dropped. He said he needed an ambulance."

Tom said: "My big brother stayed with him and I knocked on a door and asked them to phone an ambulance. …
