A mother of another young boy who drowned at the same spot off Hendon beach a decade ago said last night it was "unbelievable" there were no life belts at the site.

Sue Bernardi, 50, was left devastated when 13-year-old Jonathon, of nearby Tweed Court, was swept out to sea from the same point off the shoreline in September 1996.

Last night she said: "It's unbelievable that there's no life belts there, in the middle of a city.

"I have driven past reservoirs in the middle of nowhere and you see life belts, places where no-one is around for miles. There needs to be something done to stop this."

After he was swept out, lifeboat men dodged 15ft waves to reach Jonathon, but he could not be saved.

Mrs Bernardi said: "Of course there are costs to replace them if they're vandalised, but what price can you put on a child's life? …
