Green Routes Ban on 4x4s

A new law which effectively prevents 4x4 vehicles and motorcycles from using some "green road" routes in rural areas could come into force as early as next month.

Routes which will be affected are dual status ( where walkers, cyclists and horse-riders find themselves alongside 4x4s and motorcycles.

The Lake District National Park said yesterday that 30 routes will be affected under the newly approved Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006.

But nearly 80 other routes will still be available for recreational motor vehicle use.

Northumberland County Council said that it was assessing the impact of the new Act.

A Northumberland National Park spokeswoman said that the authority was "very anxious" about cross-border routes which have been used by off-roaders such as Salters Road, Clennel Street, The Street, and Dere Street. To ensure policing of the new regulations, the park, Northumbria Police, the Ministry of Defence, Forestry Commission and landowners have formed a group which meets regularly. …
