Since the 1960s children have been hiding behind the sofa as Doctor Who battles the Daleks.

Tonight the Time Lord is back on our screens.

For hundreds of sci-fi fans across the region it is more than just a TV programme.

Dave Price, 39, of Northumberland, saw his first episode at the age of six. Since then, his passion for the hit series has grown and grown, developing a particular liking for the Daleks.

"The Daleks were what initially attracted me." he said. "They were the first sort of characters like that of their kind and very scary. Now each generation will have their own Doctor they grow up with.

"It's brilliant because it means the programme gets new audiences and doesn't lose its appeal."

Dave has also built his very own life-size Dalek, named Tucker. Made of glass, metal, wood, and anything else he could find, Tucker stands at about 6ft.

Since constructing Tucker, Dave has been offered up to pounds 3,500 for him. But he says no money in the world would make him part with his creation.

"He took me three or four months to make and I'm very proud of him."

Word of Tucker spread, and last summer Dave was asked if he would help build the set for the stage play Trial of Davros, the creator of the Daleks.

Along with another enthusiast, Tony Myers, of Sunderland, Dave built Daleks, Davros' chair, and other bits of the set. The play was a success in the Tameside Hippodrome in Ashton-under-Lyne and earned him a country-wide reputation.

In 2001 Dave organised a Doctor Who convention.

More than 290 people turned up to The Posthouse Hotel in Newcastle to meet some of the cast members and other fans. Dave and Tony even made a full set of the interior of the Tardis to add to the effect.

"I knew there were conventions, but they always seemed to be down South. I'd always wanted to go to one. …
