A man broke into a couple's house and stole two handbags containing cash, credit cards and a mobile phone.

The robbery occurred in Lotherstone, Brookfield, Middlesbrough, at about 12.40pm on Friday, when the husband and wife were working in the garden and found their front door open.

The bags were found in a nearby street and a 5ft 7in man, aged between 16 and 20, with short curly brown hair, was seen near the house. Anyone with information should call (01642) 303126.

Woman flees

A woman and her dog were forced to flee their burning home after fire ripped through the bedroom.

The blaze started at about 1am yesterday in Tiverton Avenue, Chirton Grange, North Shields. Two crews from Tynemouth put out the flames, but much of the upstairs was destroyed.

Fire rescue

A householder was discovered by firefighters crouched at the bottom of his stairs as smoke and flames leapt around him.

The man was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital suffering from the effects of inhaling smoke after the fire broke out in Horatio Street, Fulwell, just before 11pm on Saturday. …
