Dyer Wants a Place in Derby Clash

Kieron Dyer insists he wants to break through the pain barrier during the final few weeks of the season as he bids to make a late entry into England's World Cup squad, writes Luke Edwards.

Dyer played for more than an hour in United's 3-1 victory over Wigan and is itching to start again against Sunderland today, despite the fact he will have to play two games in three days.

The midfielder's return from a complicated hamstring problem has been carefully handled by caretaker-manager Glenn Roeder. But the 27-year-old is desperate to be let off the leash against the Black Cats.

He has made no secret of his desire for Sunderland to stay in the same division as the Magpies and he does not want to miss out on the last league meeting between the two for at least 12 months.

He said: "I want to go through the pain barrier. The manager has been very good with me. When I've been nagging him, he's kept me out. He gave me a week off before the Tottenham game but it seems to have worked. …
