A congregation held a minute's silence tribute to a policeman who died when his patrol car overturned while transporting a suspect.

Villagers from West Woodburn, in Northumberland, met at All Saints Church for yesterday's service in memory of PC Joe Carroll, who lived in the small, rural community.

It is claimed PC Carroll died when the handbrake in his car, travelling at 70mph, was allegedly pulled by a soldier he had arrested.

Staff Sergeant Steven Graham, 39, an instructor at Sandhurst Military Academy, was remanded in custody on Saturday, charged with the manslaughter of married PC Carroll.

Graham, a communications trainer at the elite academy, where Prince Harry last week graduated as an Army officer, appeared before Bedlington magistrates. He was also charged with assault causing actual bodily harm to Insp Brian English, with PC Carroll on the 20-mile trip from Hexham to Etal Lane Police Station, in Newcastle.

Geoff Mason, prosecuting, outlined the charges, including the allegation that the accident was caused by the vehicle's handbrake being applied. The prosecution alleged this happened at 2.30am, when PC Carroll, 46, of West Woodburn, and Insp English were taking Graham to Etal Lane Police Station.

Graham remained expressionless during the five minute hearing when he was remanded in custody.

Magistrates were told Graham was being transported in the rear seat of the police car when it went out of control on the A69 road, near its junction with the A68 at Corbridge in the early hours of last Thursday.

Graham, wearing a navy blue sweater, a soldier for 20 years, spoke only to confirm his name and his address as Sandhurst Military Academy.

Those present in court during the hearing included two relatives of PC Carroll, his niece and her uncle. …
