Dark Horses Durham to Turn on Champion Style

Mark Davies is tipping Durham to take a few pundits by surprise this season.

Despite leading Division Two for most of last season and achieving promotion in both forms of cricket, Martyn Moxon's side has been tipped to struggle in the rarified air of Division One.

But being dark horses might just suit Durham, who kick-off their four-day campaign at Kent tomorrow.

If Durham are to thrive in the top flight, however, it's fair to say Davies will have to be firing on all cylinders.

The Stockton-born quickie has been up among the best performing bowlers in the championship over the past couple of seasons, clocking up 99 first class wickets in two seasons.

Davies's early season form allied to the availability of Steve Harmison, Liam Plunkett and Mick Lewis helped Durham race into an early lead in the Division Two promotion race.

His prolonged absence due to a fractured vertebrae was one reason why Durham had to sweat before clinching a place in the top flight. …
