Shopkeeper Stole with Scam at Till

A shopkeeper stole pounds 1,350 from her employer to help pay household bills, a court heard yesterday.

Kay Murray, 47, of The Mayfield, Barrasford, Northumberland, pleaded guilty to stealing the money from Cookes newsagents, at Meal Market, Hexham.

She started work at the shop, owned by Ian Hunter, on October 9 last year and between then and November 22 she was systematically stealing from the till.

Murray would fail to scan a number of items but would keep a record of the unscanned purchases and at the end of every shift she would take the correct amount of money from the till.

Prosecuting, Alison Wilkinson told Hexham magistrates: "Her crime was discovered by the owner who had noticed a significant drop in takings from the day she started work.

"He watched CCTV footage which clearly showed her selling items to customers but failing to scan them, she would then write something down on a piece of paper next to the till. …
