Commentator Apologises over Shearer Comment

A sports commentator who wrote an acrostic disparaging comment about Alan Shearer in Monday's Tyne-Wear derby match programme last night apologised for "a bit of harmless fun".

The first letter of each paragraph of Simon Crabtree's column in the match programme said "Shearer is crap" when read from top to bottom.

Last night, the managing director of Metro Radio, which is a major sponsor of Shearer's testimonial match against Celtic on May 11, refused to say whether the commentator would face disciplinary action.

Shearer scored a penalty in Newcastle United's 4-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, but was stretchered off after suffering a knee injury.

Mr Crabtree yesterday said: "Alan Shearer is a goal-scoring legend and has a great sense of humour. I'm sure he'll take this in the manner it was intended ( a bit of harmless fun. It wasn't meant to offend anyone. If I did ( I apologise."

But Newcastle United chairman Freddie Shepherd did not see the funny side. …
