Chancellor Gordon Brown wants to see one third of the staff cut from the Government Office for the North East (GoNE) offices in Newcastle, it emerged today.

Despite his claims that he wanted to move jobs out of Whitehall to the region, buried in small print is an instruction to streamline the staffing of Government offices.

This could see one third of the jobs in each of the offices scrapped ( expected to be around 100 in Newcastle.

A spokesman from GoNE said: "The review calls for a 33% reduction in staff between October 2004 and 2008.

"The GoNE baseline figure was 340 and there has already been a reduction of 8%.

"We expect the remaining reduction to be achieved through natural turnover and also by redeploying some members of staff to other public bodies and in some cases by voluntary severance.

"We do not expect compulsory redundancy to be necessary."

He added: "Our role as the essential link between central and local government and its partners will be strengthened. …
