Teenager Killed in Metro Line Accident

Police were last night investigating a fatal crash on the Tyne and Wear Metro system.

The victim, believed to be a teenager, was hit by a train near Monkton Terrace, Jarrow, South Tyneside, at around 2pm yesterday.

The train was travelling between the Jarrow and Bede stations when the accident took place.

After the incident, shaken passengers were evacuated from the train and escorted by police officers to Jarrow station.

Later on, firefighters were seen removing two footballs from the side of the track.

Angela Deveraeux, 71, of Ravel Court, Jarrow, was on the Metro when she heard a bang and the train screeched to a halt.

She rang her husband, who then walked to the scene where he saw what he believed to be a teenage boy lying face down near the tracks.

Mrs Deveraeux said: "I was in the front carriage and we had just come under the bridge when there was a bang. The driver braked hard and everybody fell forward.

"Then people from the front of the train said there had been a young lad hit by the train. …
