A young police officer was forced off the beat to do desk work after she was smashed in the face with a bottle by a teenage drunk.

PC Clare Douglas had stopped Wayne Jones on New Year's Day while investigating reports that a stolen car had been dumped near Jarrow's Viking Shopping Centre.

PC Douglas grabbed Jones, 19, as he tried to flee. But Jones was holding a lager bottle in his hand, Newcastle Crown Court heard. And when he swung out in the struggle the bottle hit PC Douglas in the face.

"The impact resulted in the teeth on her lower jaw piercing her mouth, leaving a hole in the lower lip," said Mr Tony Glover, prosecuting. "It required gluing and stitching in hospital."

PC Douglas ( who had to abandon plans to be a bridesmaid at an upcoming wedding ( spent several weeks off duty recovering from the attack.

And although she has now returned to duty she has been assigned station bound recuperative work away from the streets. …
