An eight-year-old girl was left traumatised by a stranger who grabbed hold of her in the street as she made her way to school.

The youngster was walking in Hexham, Northumberland, close to her school on October 11 last year when she was confronted by Martin Jude.

"She describes how Jude approached her, took hold of her arm and tried to pull her backwards the way she had just come," said Tim Gittins, prosecuting at Newcastle Crown Court.

"He said at the time `You are coming with me' and they moved a distance she later described as about seven steps.

"As he did that she was trying to break free from his grasp. She was asking him to get off and eventually broke free and managed to run off.

"She ran straight to school to report the incident. He didn't pursue her once she had broken free."

Mr Gittins said it was accepted there was no sexual motive behind the attack which happened at 8.45 in the morning.

Jude, who suffered a severe head injury as a teenager, at one stage suggested his motive was to speak to the girl because he perceived she or someone had been mocking him, the court heard. …
