As the mother of a murder victim and after reading Theresa Cave's letter (Your Say, 15.4.06) I totally agree that the murderers have no deterrent and are not in fear of the law.

It seems the Government supplies them with the tools to re-offend. Anti-social behaviour is spurred on by the 24 hour drinking laws, the virtual legalising of cannabis, 16 inch blades being sold to 14-year-olds without ID, and the consumption of drugs.

These laws are the tools for violence and anti-social behaviour - and then there's rehabilitation of the offenders back into the community to re-offend and murder.

The Government then wonders why violence is occurring and introduces ASBOs. We are dealing with youths who wear ASBOs as a badge of honour and laugh at the painful naivety of those who believe community services will help them to find a meaningful place in society.

It would make more sense to pressurise the Government and ask for the judicial system to be reviewed as a priority and impose severe sentencing on those who are a threat to the public. …
