Thank you Carol for your letter asking whether coaching or the personal development training course I run can help support people in adapting to change.

You have also asked what kind of issues people bring to the coaching and courses and whether by doing some work with me you can learn and develop new skills and strategies that support you in moving forward.

The answer is yes to both.

From childhood upwards we are faced with changes that impact on us and adapting to some of these changes can be fundamental to human survival. Things that children go through can impact on adults responsible for them, and, most emphatically, things that adults go through more often than not affect children.

Here are some examples of changes we go through from childhood to adulthood and some of the emotions we can feel around them.

Jealousy of a sibling when a new baby comes along.

Going to play group and being parted from a parent for the first time.

Fear and vulnerability, adapting social and learning skills, being taught to share, communicate, respond, listen, participate and contribute.

Experiencing bullying, prejudice, abuse or rejection can also change your outlook, as can the experiences where you are nurtured, loved, inspired and encouraged.

Moving schools and homes, greater demands to study and achieve success, winning and losing, adolescence, a first romance and a first break-up have a knock-on effect too.

In our ever-changing world we need to be able to adapt to change and to recognise that while some things have changed for the worse, many other things have changed for the better. While life is fast paced today and stress is on the increase, generally speaking the standard of living has greatly improved.

Marriage, divorce, bereavement, illness, changes in career, redundancy and retirement all require skills in adapting to change. …
