Judge Names Interim Coffee County Sheriff; the Chief Deputy Will Take over until an Election to Replace Rob Smith

Coffee County Probate Judge Sylvia Stone has appointed Chief Deputy Joe White as the county's interim sheriff to replace Rob Smith, who resigned after pleading guilty to misconduct in office.

Stone said White will take over officially Sunday, the day after Smith's resignation becomes effective.

"Joe will serve until we elect somebody in the special election,'' she said.

The special election to complete the remaining 1 1/2 years in Smith's term will be held along with the primary election on Tuesday, July 18. If necessary, a runoff will be held Tuesday, Aug. 8, Stone said.

Smith had no chief deputy until he appointed White after his March 6 indictment.

Stone said she appointed White because of his experience serving under three Coffee County sheriffs and because he already is running the office.

She said she was also told White was correcting some deficiencies in the department.

"He's been serving warrants, checking on bonds and other things the judges were concerned about,'' Stone said. …
