Grieves Fined and Banned for Clash

Newcastle skipper James Grieves was fined pounds 250 and banned from the rest of the meeting by Grand Prix referee Tony Steele, writes Andrew Dalby.

But he was also told that was the end of the matter, following his clash with Newport veteran Neil Collins after heat 13 of the Diamonds' opening Premier League match yesterday at the Hayley Stadium.

Newcastle led for much of the contest, including 20-16 after six heats and 37-35, thanks to a brilliant 5-1 by Jamie Robertson and Josef Franc in heat 12.

But a mistake by George Stancl during the 13th race followed immediately by Grieves's incident with Collins were major moments of a meeting that lived up to the stormy rivalry whenever the Diamonds visit this track.

Stancl wobbled in second place at the end of the first lap just as Collins was moving inside Grieves with Newport Captain Craig Watson well clear for the fourth win of his full maximum.

The error handed Collins second spot for a Wasps 5-1 that put them 40-38 up but tempers erupted as the riders slowed beyond the chequered flag. …
