Jerry Springer ( The Opera at Newcastle Theatre Royal until Saturday.

They used to accuse opera of being high brow and elitist. The accusation doesn't fit so easily now.

Here we have the highest of the high mixing with the lowest of the low, an operatic presentation of the ultimate trailer trash TV show.

But in shedding one accusation, the show's creators have deftly acquired a batch more, upsetting Christians by sending the TV presenter to hell and having him try to resolve the ultimate conflict ( between God (a Michael Winner lookalike in an Elvis costume) and the devil.

The first half is an operatic version of Jerry Springer's programme, in which he exposes domestic disharmony in front of a baying audience.

"I wanna be on TV... choose me, " urges the opening choral refrain. Dumpy Dwight is on because he has three lovers ( Montel because he has a thing about nappies.

After Jerry gets shot by accident, he goes to hell where Montel becomes Jesus in a loincloth. …
