Quinn 'Hopeful' of Cats Takeover

Niall Quinn has confirmed his Irish-based consortium are `hopeful' their takeover talks will lead to a formal bid to buy Sunderland.

The former Black Cats striker was at the Stadium of Light for yesterday's 3-0 defeat against Arsenal and was given a tremendous reception by the fans, who believe he and his backers can reverse the decline of their club.

Sunderland chairman Bob Murray has announced he is in talks with Quinn to sell his 56.8% controlling interest in the club.

Speaking before the game, Quinn had to choose his words carefully to avoid falling foul of stock market rules.

However, the mere fact he was at the ground and discussing the possibility of a takeover was enough to give the fans hope.

Quinn said: "Our bidding vehicle is in discussions with Sunderland. Unfortunately, Stock Exchange rules mean I cannot give any details.

"Hopefully it will lead to an offer which is satisfactory.

"I cannot let you know specific details but I am chairman of the bidding vehicle. …
