She Had to Face Many Problems with Cancer, but She Never Gave Up Hope Once during the Last Six Years

Tributes were paid today to brave Teesside cancer sufferer Ruth Wallace who has lost her six-year fight for life.

The 32-year-old mum, of Reid Terrace, Guisborough, died peacefully in hospital on Monday after battling breast cancer and secondary cancers in her brain, bones, liver and heart.

Today her family said their over-riding memories of Ruth are of her great bravery, her unquenchable optimism and the priceless message of hope she often shared with other sufferers, especially the young.

Her sister, Jayne, 36, who lives in North Carolina, America, said: "Up until the last two weeks, she had been very active and positive. But then she suddenly deteriorated.

"We will never forget her courage and steadfastness in the face of great adversity.

"She had to face so many problems with cancer, but never gave up hope once during the last six years.

"She had a great faith in God and this was very important to her.

"She never felt sorry for herself and always remained positive.

"She never let her cancer beat her and, as soon as she had her many treatments, could not wait to get on with her life."

Ruth, a former model, died early on Monday at Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital.

Her nine-year-old daughter, Yasmin, will remain with her father, Gary, in Guisborough.

The couple had divorced some years ago, but remained good friends.

Ruth is survived by parents Ian and Jean, of Guisborough, brother David, 39, of Guisborough, and sisters Jayne and Kate, 35, of Gran Canaria.

Last year American doctors saved Ruth's life when she was struck down with a potentially fatal heart condition during a family holiday.

Specialists performed emergency heart surgery when she was visiting her sister in North Carolina.

Ruth said afterwards: "My whole life flashed before me. …
