Thunder Link-Up Plan Kicked into Touch

Gateshead Thunder's planned link up with union neighbours Newcastle Falcons has been kicked into touch.

The Tynesiders attracted their best gate of the season last year ( 705 ( when they crossed the Tyne to play York City Knights.

And they had hoped to cash in on Kingston Park's corporate facilities on July 30 and August 13 ( when they take on Featherstone and Hunslet Hawks.

But after extensive negotiations the Falcons, who pulled out of a survival package to take an ailing Thunder on board during the close season, have pulled the plug.

"It's very disappointing," said Gateshead chairman Bill Midgley (pictured right). "Negotiations have been going on for some time and we thought it was just a case of dotting the is and crossing the ts."

"There's a lack of corporate hospitality at the International Stadium and we may also have attracted a larger gate at the Falcons. We've also lost the chance to promote professional rugby league in the area and we may now have to look at alternative venues. …
