SATURDAY CHOICE; Moore Than a Legend

Article excerpt

Bobby Moore 9pm, BBC2 We'll probably see that picture of Bobby Moore on his England teammates' shoulders, holding aloft the 1966 World Cup, about a million times this summer.

The story of the man in the photograph is no less heartwarming, even though this new biography uses that way-too-familiar documentary formula of old film, memories and drama.

Moore's tale is straightforwardly told, kicking off with his birth in the Blitzravaged East End and following the determination of the kid nicknamed "tubby" to practise until his footballing skills caught the attention of a talent scout and he ended up at West Ham.

Moore's first wife, Tina, candidly recalls hers and Moore's first dance at Ilford Palais, their Majorcan honeymoon (accompanied by some of Moore's West Ham teammates) and her desire to protect her husband when he was diagnosed with cancer in the mid-Sixties.

Ex-players and Moore's mates also bung in their two penn'uths, and the dramatised sections manage not to be too cheesy (Joseph Kennedy as young Moore and Emmerdale's Ty Glaser as Tina are both nicely shy). Though it contains no huge revelations, this is an absorbing show. Mind you, maybe this is down to Ray Winstone's "don't mess with my hero" voiceover.

For many viewers, of course, it will be the footage from the 1966 World Cup final that truly stirs the emotions.

If this is you, come back to BBC2 at 9pm on Sunday for World Cup Stories, a new series beginning with England's history in the competition.

BEST FILM Assault on Precinct 13 8pm, Sky Movies 2 (15) (2005). Ethan Hawke, Lawrence Fishburne.

An updating of John Carpenter's micro-budgeted 1976 actioner.
