Tunnel Protest Set to Go On

An environmental campaigner saw his one-man battle to stop the building of a new Tyne Tunnel defeated yesterday following a ruling by the High Court.

Bryan Atkinson, 42, a Friends of the Earth activist from South Shields, raised concerns over where thousands of tonnes of dug-out earth would be dumped.

Yesterday, the body behind the pounds 185m New Tyne Crossing, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (TWPTA), welcomed the court's decision.

It said the link, which will double the number of cars passing under the Tyne and link the A1 and A19 roads, would be a major boost to the region's economy.

The scheme has already been delayed by the action, and is now not due to be completed until 2011.

But Mr Atkinson, a father-of-four from Broughton Road, vowed to appeal, and said instructions have been given to his legal team to contest the ruling.

He also defended his use of legal aid to fight the decision which he insists has widespread significance. …
