Young cooks scoop top awards

Chefs impressed judges by cooking up mouthwatering dishes.

Jamie Walsh, head chef at the Fisherman's Lodge in Jesmond, Newcastle, beat off stiff competition to scoop The North East Chef of the Year award.

The two-day event was supported by Newcastle College's CoVE status Institute of Culinary Excellence, the `Passionate people, Passionate places' regional image campaign for North East England, Gateshead Council, Howell-Cumming's Ltd and Enodis.

And Newcastle College Hospitality Department has been named winner of the North East's only inter-college cooking competition for the second year running.

Jamie, 25, of Gateshead, said: "I'm dead happy. It was quite a challenge and I wasn't actually that pleased with what I put out, so I didn't expect to win. It was a bit of a surprise. Some of the other chefs there had 10 years' more experience than me so it's quite good to beat them."

Newcastle college won overall winner of the 28th inter-college competition on Wednesday as well as overall winner of the live classes and overall winner of the static classes. …
