English rookie Matthew Wilson arrives in Sardinia this weekend as the youngest-ever world championship points scorer, but his Rally of Italy challenge has been blunted before the event has even started.

The 19-year-old Cumbrian made history in Argentina last time out but was forced to change his engine, incurring a one-minute penalty for this weekend's rally.

As in Formula One, rally engines must last two races but the power plant Wilson used in Argentina developed a water leak and had to be switched.

To add to his difficulties, Wilson has no experience of the Sardinian roads and will be forced to adapt swiftly.

The Stobart Ford driver said: "I've never been to Sardinia before. I was meant to be there last year but I ended up watching the result from my hospital bed as it was a week after my big accident in the Rally of Wales.

"I've never seen the stages before in person, only on telly but we should get a good idea on the recce. …
