Walker refutes that 77pc are willing to sell homes

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save houses earmarked for demolition are to launch a painstaking challenge to council claims that a majority are willing to sell.

A new petition will be taken to every household in the threatened Gresham ward in Middlesbrough to try to establish a detailed picture of residents' feelings.

The move comes after Councillor Dave Budd, executive member for regeneration, said in a statement to the Evening Gazette last week "77pc of the owner-occupiers in phase 1 are willing sellers."

Resident Peter Birt who chaired the meeting said: "We would argue that 70pc of people are actually against demolition. We need to write to the council, the office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Prime Minister and tell councillors that we don't want this to go ahead."

And Gresham Cllr Ken Walker, told a meeting of 50 residents last night that volunteers would be visiting 1,500 houses in the area to test council claims. …
