Having lost a number of players from last week's victory against Whitley Bay to the National League Three squad, Gateshead Storm went down 46-20 to Cumbrian outfit Copeland Athletic in the Rugby League Conference.

Gateshead started much the better and opened the scoring with a try from centre Paul Lindsay, although Chris Lindsay was unable to improve their points tally from wide out on the right.

Copeland were soon in the game, though, when Kristian Wood crossed on 20 minutes, giving stand-off Tony Burns a straightforward conversion.

Storm regained the lead soon afterwards when winger Michael Johnston touched down in the corner.

Lindsay was again wide with the conversion attempt ( but Copeland crossed twice more before the break to hold a 16-8 interval lead.

Gates was first on the scoresheet after the interval and when James Cartmell increased the score to 24-8 on 46 minutes it looked as if the Cumbrians would run away with the game. …
