St Helens' Great Britain scrum-half Sean Long, who needs just three tries for a career century, will not get the chance to reach the landmark against his old club in Saturday's engage Super League derby at Wigan.

The 29-year-old Long, whose 97 tries have come in 189 Super League appearances, revealed after last Saturday's 42-18 Challenge Cup win over Bradford that Saints coach Daniel Anderson had taken a gamble over his fitness.

He produced a man of the match performance despite being unable to train because of an unspecified injury but will almost certainly be given a week off to fully recover.

"He is in doubt," said Anderson. "He didn't train at the back end of last week at all and he looked like a mummy in the dressing room.

"It's nothing dramatic and, if push came to shove, he could play but we won't risk it if it's going to make the injury worse."

Anderson, who declined to reveal Long's exact injury, admitted a six-point cushion at the top of the table has given him the luxury of being able to rest players, as he did when St Helens lost for the only time this season, at Huddersfield earlier this month. …
