Busy and Keeping Ahead of the Field

North-East up-and-comers Field Music are sharing the stage with their musical mates, The Futureheads, to launch Orange Evolution 2006 on Thursday. Sam Wonfor talks to David Brewis.

A PRECISE answer befitting one of those new-fangled Sat Nav contraptions comes over the telephone following my casual enquiry as to where Sunderland trio Field Music are today.

"Woodhall Services on the M1 at Sheffield," replies David Brewis who shares songwriting, guitar, drum and bass-playing in the band with brother Peter; Andrew Moore provides the keyboards.

"We're one our way to a gig at CoCo in London with StereoLab," he continues, "things are going OK."

Things have been going so OK for the band since they released their eponymous debut last August, that in January they were able to give up their day jobs and concentrate on making and playing music full time.

"We wanted to give ourselves three or four months off to make the second album," says David, "but we've managed to fit in 40 gigs so far this year." Those would include seven Stateside gigs and concerts in Berlin and Paris, as well as a raft of performances all over the UK.

"Imagine what it will be like when we're not having any time off," laughs the 25-year-old.

The timing of our interview coincides with the upcoming launch of Orange Evolution 2006, a 12-day music festival across Newcastle and Gateshead,

culminating on May 29 with Freevolution ( a three-stage outdoor gathering on both sides of the Tyne, featuring Hard-Fi, Graham Coxon, The Proclaimers, Orson, Hayseed Dixie and Boy Kill Boy.

But there's a lot of music to get through before we get to Bank Holiday Monday.

Fellow Wearsiders (and long-time collaborators) The Futureheads are headlining a unique double performance on Thursday night to get the evolutionary proceedings underway ( and their Field Music friends will be right alongside them. …
