A TOP rail boss has broken the 1 million pay barrier for the first time, bringing a furious reaction from unions.

John Armitt, chief executive of Network Rail, received a total salary, bonus and pension bonanza of 1,031,728.

This included a bonus of 353,000 for meeting targets including helping make the trains run on time.

The top four NR directors received a total of more than 1million in bonuses between them. Ian Coucher NR's deputy chief executive received a 315,000 bonus on top of his 440,000 salary for the year ending in March.

But bonuses went down for NR's 32,000 employees - they each received an average of 954, a reduction of 258 on the previous 12 months.

An NR spokesman said this was because targets had been set higher and that bonuses across the board had come down. The directors' pay packets were swollen by a secondary scheme - which calculates bonuses on a three-year programme
