Suspects in two separate murder investigations were continuing to be questioned today.

Four people have been arrested over the suspected revenge killing of father-of-seven David Rice.

Mr Rice, of South Shields, was shot several times by two masked men as he sat in his car near the Marsden Grotto pub in South Shields last Wednesday.

The men drove off in a black Ford Mondeo, later found burnt out in nearby Lizard Lane.

On Saturday magistrates granted police a further 36 hours to continue questioning a 38-year-old Gateshead man arrested on Friday on suspicion of murder. Hours earlier police arrested a 44-year-old South Shields man on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder early on Friday at a flat in Wallsend. He was released on bail pending further inquiries.

A South Shields woman, 25, had also been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. She was also released on bail. …
