Objections may be raised by Middlesbrough Council over plans for a new Asda store at South Bank.

Asda is proposing to redevelop its existing store at South Bank and is seeking planning consent from Redcar and Cleveland Council.

Middlesbrough Council, as a neighbouring authority, has been asked for its views.

On Friday, Middlesbrough Council's planning committee is being recommended to lodge an objection to the Asda proposals.

Planning officers report to the committee: "The proposal would involve virtually doubling the gross floorspace compared to that of the existing store and almost doubling the net retail floorspace.

"Such an increase in floorspace cannot be considered to be commensurate with the scale and function of the South Bank district centre," say the planning officers.

They say the proposal would not comply with national and Tees Valley planning policies.

"The recently completed Middlesbrough Retail Study acknowledges that Middlesbrough town centre is recognised as a sub-regional centre for retailing but that it also faces significant challenges if it is to continue to fill this role. …
