Eric Alston's Reverence seems to have plenty in his favour ahead in his bid to land the Group Two Temple Stakes (7.15) at Sandown tomorrow evening.

The five-year-old has never won above class two level but his run in a Group Three at Newmarket last time suggested a Pattern-race success is not far away.

He finished a close fourth behind Irish challenger Dandy Man in the Palace House Stakes on good to firm ground, conditions far too quick for this mud lover.

Connections of most of the field will have been staring at the skies in disbelief in recent days at the amount of rain that has fallen but Alston will have been rubbing his hands with glee.

The son of Mark Of Esteem has never won on ground quicker than good to soft and despite his pedigree suggesting he should be a miler, he is seen to best effect over the minimum trip.

After suffering setback as a youngster, Reverence didn't make his debut until he was a four-year-old and finished second at 50-1.

He followed that up by winning at Ripon and despite suffering a reverse at Newmarket after that, he went on to rattle off a hat-trick at the end of the season.

He began this campaign with an honourable third in the Cammidge Trophy at Redcar behind Les Arcs and then landed a conditions event at Nottingham with ease before being raised in class last time.

He looks ready for another crack at Group level and can land this good prize for his likeable handler.

Sir Michael Stoute's Notnowcato can take the Group Three Brigadier Gerard Stakes (7.50).

Steadily brought along by his master, trainer he improved to land the Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Headquarters on his last start after previously looking no better than a handicapper.

He looks a typical late bloomer for the yard and the fact that the in-form Stoute has persevered with him as a four-year-old should be a tip in itself.

A quick glance at his exalted entries later in the season include the Queen Anne Stakes and Coral Eclipse, both at Group One level, and show how highly he is thought of. …
