Firms Get Lesson in Fraud from the Expert

A convicted global fraudster has been recruited by police to help fight crime.

Former Miami lawyer Humberto Aguilar ( jailed for money laundering ( will share his experience with dozens of business people on Tyneside.

e is one of the speakers at a national conference at St James' Park, organised by Northumbria Police and the North East Fraud Forum.

The theme of the 2006 annual NEFF conference is "Learning From Fraudsters".

Aguilar was charged with money laundering in the US Federal District Court and fled to Spain where he arrested and extradited.

He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the Internal Revenue Service regulations involving money laundering and also a conspiracy involving the importation of dangerous narcotics.

NEFF was established in Newcastle in 2003. It aims to promote fraud awareness by sharing new crime trends.

Northumbria Police economic crime unit's Det Insp Phil Butler, who heads NEFF, said: "We look at a number of measures to tackle commercial fraud and in the wider community. …
