Bond Is Just the Man for the Job

World Cup winner Alan Ball says that Newcastle United have not appointed a yes man in new No 2 Kevin Bond.

Glenn Roeder was delighted to bring his former England B colleague to Tyneside from Portsmouth this week and Ball knows all about the former Southampton defender's coaching qualities after deploying him as coach during his time as boss at Manchester City and Fratton Park.

Bond and Roeder are close pals but Ball is adamant that the West Ham-born coach won't take any flak and is certainly not here for the ride.

He said today: "Kevin is a smashing coach and I really enjoyed working with him.

"He is loyal and what I really liked about him was that, unlike a lot of assistant managers in the game, he isn't just there to say yes boss, yes boss. He has an input and a point of view and he will really give you his point of view.

"There are times when he has actually argued his point, which is good for a manager. You need that."

Ball, who lifted the World Cup with England at Wembley 40 years ago, is currently bracing himself for the World Cup finals in Germany. …
