England sampled their World Cup training facilities for the first time today.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad took the short bus ride down the hill from their luxury retreat in the Black Forest to their training ground in nearby Buhlertal.

All eyes were on Wayne Rooney who appears to be making good progress as he recovers from a broken foot.

It will be Rooney's last session before he returns to Manchester tomorrow for a crucial scan on his broken foot.

Rooney was filmed passing a ball last week and has stepped up his fitness regime this week, with a spectacular scissors kick hitting the headlines.

But tomorrow's scan will be assessed before any decision is made about his participation in the World Cup finals.

The England and Manchester United physios must make sure his broken metatarsal is ready to withstand the impact of a fierce tackle before they will allow him back into full training.

Only then will he be able to step up his bid to play for England in the tournament.

Eriksson is resigned to being without him at the start of the campaign, but remains hopeful he will be fit at some point during the knockout rounds.

The England boss hoped to see Gary Neville train with the full squad today after a week out of the group to help him overcome a hamstring strain.

Neville, who missed the win against Jamaica, has only played 45 minutes in the last month and Eriksson wants to see him train hard before he throws him into the first game against Paraguay on Saturday.

David Beckham, John Terry and Ashley Cole all missed training yesterday as a precaution.

England's players are confident they will have the edge when it comes to fitness in the World Cup finals.

Despite his slight ankle injury, Beckham said: "I've been told the fitness levels this time are exceptional. That's obviously a good sign. …
