Gilmore Flips Car in Crash, Charged with DUI; Report: Former JU Basketball Star Had .14 Blood-Alcohol Level after Crash Wednesday Morning

Former Jacksonville University basketball star Artis Gilmore was charged with driving under the influence Wednesday after his 2001 Ford Crown Victoria was found flipped on Touchton Road.

The 7-foot-2 Gilmore was not hurt in the crash, but Florida Highway Patrol troopers said witnesses had to help him from the driver's seat because he was hanging from the seat belt.

The accident occurred about 3 a.m. Wednesday as Gilmore, 57, was driving in the 4400 block of Touchton Road near Southside Boulevard, authorities said. His car left the road, struck a tree and then overturned onto its roof in the outside lane of the road, according to FHP Lt. Bill Leeper.

A trooper investigating the accident said he smelled alcohol, and Gilmore said he had a few glasses of wine earlier and was on his way to his South Jacksonville home.

He was arrested on the misdemeanor DUI charge after failing a series of field-sobriety exercises, according to a Highway Patrol report. …
