I've finally taken a chance and planted out my runner and Borlotti beans in the cold cruel open air. Hopefully there will be no more frosts to kill them off as so many were killed of on May 16. I take the trouble to tie each one loosely with string to the supporting cane. It seems to encourage the climbers to start twisting sooner rather than later. They don't start into serious growth until they start twisting around the canes so it seems a worthwhile effort. If the leader shoots are ready to start twining, make sure you twine them clockwise up the pole, that's the way they grow in this hemisphere. Water in after planting despite the damp conditions and don't forget to apply a few slug pellets around each plant.Do plant a few spares in case the worst happens and a cutworm chops a plant or two off at the base. …
