Children from a County Durham school who were given free tickets by Sir Elton John to his open air show spelled out their thanks at the weekend.

The Year Five pupils at St Benet's RC Primary School in Ouston, Chester-le-Street, wrote to the Rocket Man inviting him to open their school fete, which took place yesterday.

He had to decline but sent them 60 free tickets for Saturday's show at Durham County Cricket Club's Riverside ground, at Chester-le-Street by way of apology ( 25 for each pupil, 25 for a parent or guardian and 10 extra for friends and staff.

And on Saturday, the pupils held up a series of giant banners spelling out a thank you message to Sir Elton from their seats in the stand.

Joanne Anderson, secretary of the Friends of St Benet's, a parent/teacher association, which came up with the idea of writing to Sir Elton, said last night the pupils had enjoyed every minute of the "exhilarating" concert.

Joanne, 35, a fundraising consultant, went to the concert with her 10-year-old daughter Beth, a Year Five pupil at St Benet's. …
