Cumbria captain Cliff Heath yesterday spoke with pride of his team's memorable performance in The Big Six which saw one of the tournament's minnows finish runners-up to Yorkshire.

No 1 Will Bowe led the way with a morning 71 on a day when of the 84 scores returned in the Northern Counties Stokeplay Championship at Pleasington, Blackburn, only one broke 70.

At one stage late in the day Cumbria were within three points of Yorkshire before, almost inevitably, the all-powerful White Rose county broke away to win.

"Bearing in mind we have only 31 clubs in Cumbria and Yorkshire have almost 300, it was a great team effort on our part," said Heath.

"We drew with Yorkshire earlier in the season, so it just shows what can be done with the mixture of youth and experience we put out for The Big Six."
