Butcher: Sven Can Take Robson Route to Glory

FORMER England captain Terry Butcher believes Sven-Goran Eriksson's World Cup team could evolve here just as successfully as Bobby Robson's 1990 semi-finalists.

Eriksson reveals the latest phase of his World Cup strategy in Nuremberg tomorrow when Dwight Yorke's Trinidad & Tobago attempt to derail England.

The Swede's game plan will make special provision for the former Manchester United striker, who now plays for Butcher's new team, Sydney FC.

"The interest in the World Cup in Australia is huge," said Butcher, who begins a two-year stint in Sydney after his World Cup role as a BBC pundit ends.

"When I joined Sydney I told them I wouldn't allow Dwight back in the country if he scored a hat-trick against England!"

Butcher's patriotism often surfaced during a 77-cap career and was never more apparent than when he led England to the last four in Italy in 1990.

Although Robson started that tournament with a 4-4-2 line-up he ended it with a 3-5-2 formation, with Butcher playing as one of three centre-backs. …
