Black Cats Play Carlisle in Pre-Season

Eleven days before their players return from holiday for training, Sunderland announced their first pre-season fixture yesterday, writes Stuart Rayner.

The Black Cats will play Carlisle United at Brunton Park on July 29, kicking off at 3pm.

Last week the club was forced to deny reports they were unable to organise warm-up games for the coming season because of the absence of a manager at the Stadium of Light. Ironically, the claims were sparked when Sunderland prevaricated over the very fixture they have now agreed.

Sunderland, though, have proved as good as their word.

Chief executive Peter Walker said: "This match is just one of a few we're looking at as our build-up to the start of the new season." The match will be Carlisle's first at Brunton Park since last season, when they won League Two. The Cumbrians had been hoping for a high-profile game for the last remaining slot in their pre-season schedule and forced the Black Cats' hands last week by suggesting they might have to look elsewhere for opposition if Sunderland were unwilling or unable to agree to the date soon. …
